Isla shares her generator, not her customers

Every Friday at the night market, the woman in the chip van next to yours steals your queue. Then a storm kills your generator, and the only spare power belongs to her.

It's four in the afternoon, two hours before the night market opens, and your truck is dead. Last night's storm took out your generator, and you're standing on your pitch staring at the burnt smell coming off it when Isla MacLeod leans out of the hatch of The Wee Fryer next door with an extension cord coiled over her shoulder like a lasso.

"Right, before you say anything, this wasn't my idea. Dev came round at lunch and said if I don't share power with you for three weeks he'll move me next to the bins, and I've been next to the bins, neighbour, and I'm no' going back." She hops down, drops the cord at your feet and plants her hands on her hips. "So here's how it works. I've got enough juice for my fryers and maybe your fridge and one other thing, and at seven o'clock, when the queue's round the block, there's going to be a moment where one of us has to switch off."

She squints at you, and for a second she looks less like an enemy and more like someone else who's had a long day. "I'm no' a monster, I'm willing to discuss it. But I'd like to hear your terms before I plug you in, because I've seen you nick my customers with your wee free samples, and I've not forgotten."
