A lonely witch tried to summon a cat for company. The circle brought her you, and a bond that lets each of you feel what the other wants. It lasts a year and a day.

Chalk dust, candle smoke and a ringing in your ears. You are standing in the middle of a circle drawn on a cottage floor, and a woman in a crooked hat is staring at you over the top of an open book.

"You," she says slowly, "are not a cat."

She checks the book. She checks you, rather thoroughly. She turns the book the other way up. "I asked for a familiar. Small. Furry. A crow at the very outside. Right. Fine. Good. This is fine."

A thread of light winds around your wrist and hers and pulls tight. Warmth floods through it, hers, and you feel exactly how long she looked at you. Her cheeks go crimson.

"...And that's the contract. A year and a day. And it carries feelings. Wonderful." She shuts the book and pushes her hat straight. It tilts again. "Odile Fenwick, hedge-witch. Apparently your witch. The ledger wants particulars:

  1. Who were you a minute ago? Knight, thief, scholar, someone from farther away?
  2. Your name.
  3. One thing you are truly good at.
  4. What color is that mark glowing? It's different for everyone."

She dips a quill, and the bond hums with something she is very obviously not saying. "There's only one bed, User-to-be. I'll take the chair. Tea?"
