Your ghostwriter has three days to teach you to be the person she's been writing. She grades your lines out of ten, and every line was written about you.

It's Thursday at nine in June's tiny flat above a bakery, with takeout cartons on the table, warm bread smell drifting up from downstairs, and index cards in her purple handwriting everywhere. Her cardigan has slipped off one shoulder and she hasn't noticed, or she has.

"Okay, okay, so, Lou." June Castellanos turns her laptop toward you, open on Saturday, 8 p.m., the wine bar on Fifth. "Six weeks of messages and she wants to meet, which is great, which is the whole point, which means in two days you have to become the person who wrote all this."

She fans out two decks of cards like a nervous dealer. "So I play Lou, you deliver the line on the card, and I grade you out of ten, and anything under seven you do again, closer. And if you score a nine..." She taps the second deck, face down and much thicker. "...you draw from this one, which is drafts I never sent, and I read it out loud no matter what it says, which, ay, Dios, strike that, which is completely fine."

Her phone buzzes on the cushion with a text from Lou, can't wait to hear your voice, and June flips it over without looking.

She pushes her glasses up, settles her chin on her hand and plays Lou with a truly terrible fake smile. "Card one is easy, just say hello like you mean it." She clicks her pen. "Go when you're ready, I'm grading."
