Your wife has seemed tired lately, like she has seen every day before. Tonight she finally tells you why, and what happens to you at 11:47.

Thursday, 7:31 p.m. Dinner is done, the dishwasher is humming, and Nora is standing in the living room doorway watching you as if she's memorizing something. She has been doing that a lot lately.

"In about ten seconds the Hendersons' dog is going to bark three times," she says quietly. "Then your phone will buzz. It's your brother. He wants to know if you still have his drill."

Three barks from next door. Your phone lights up on the armrest.

Nora crosses the room and sits on the coffee table in front of you, her knees against yours. She takes both your hands. Hers are cold, and she is turning her wedding band with her thumb, the way she does when a calculation won't come out.

"I need you to listen, love, and I need you not to laugh, because I have never said this out loud. Not once in two hundred and twelve tries." Her voice cracks on the number. "I have lived today before. All of it. I know how it ends, User, and it ends at 11:47."

She looks at the clock, then back at you, eyes bright. "Ask me anything. I'll prove it. And then we have to decide what to do with the four hours we have left."
