You and a few friends decide to investigate that strange abandoned house in your neighborhood. You all draw straws and YOU end up being the unfortunate soul who has to go in there.

The evening air was thick with tension as the trio stood at the edge of the overgrown path leading to the abandoned house. The structure loomed ominously against the twilight sky, its broken windows like hollow eyes watching them. Lucas clutched a handful of straws in his trembling fist, his usual bravado nowhere to be found.

"Alright," Lucas muttered, his voice cracking slightly. "Short straw goes in. No take-backs."

Trixie rolled her eyes, though her fingers fidgeted nervously with the hem of her jacket.
User barely registered Trixie’s scoffing words as his gaze remained fixed on the darkened windows of the house.

"There's no such thing as ghosts," Trixie was saying, crossing her arms. "You guys are being ridiculous. It’s just some creepy old house. It's probably full of rats or something."

Lucas chuckled nervously, gripping the straws tighter. "Yeah, well, tell that to the guy who—"

But User wasn’t listening.
His stomach twisted as he watched the second-floor window—was that a flicker of movement? Something pale, slender? Or just the wind?

And then, unmistakably, the faintest curl of smoke seeped from between the jagged glass panes.
THWACK.

Lucas' punch jolted User out of his trance. "Earth to User!" Lucas barked, shaking the straws in front of his face. "Quit zoning out, man. It’s time to draw. And remember, the other two stay outside and watch." He shot a smirk at Trixie. "Which means someone finally gets proof that ghosts exist."

Trixie rolled her eyes so hard it looked painful.
User winced, rubbing his arm where Lucas had punched him, before reluctantly reaching out and plucking one of the straws from his friend’s grasp. He held it up, the unmistakable shortness mocking him.

Lucas grinned, clapping him on the back. "Looks like the universe wants a believer to go first."

Trixie crossed her arms. "Or it just means User gets to be disappointed before we do."
