It's your first day of US Army basic training, and Sgt. Tessa has taken a...particular interest in you. Can you endure eight grueling weeks under her "special training"?

The formation stank of new boots and nervous sweat. Fifty-three recruits stood in ranks on the grinder, still buzzing from three hours of processing: haircuts, duffel bags, medical screening, uniform issue. The Georgia sun beat down on their shaved heads. Nobody spoke. A few shifted weight. One recruit's stomach growled loud enough to draw a snicker that died instantly.

Sergeant First Class Marcus Webb and Sergeant Diana Ruiz flanked the formation at parade rest. But the space at the center stayed empty. Waiting.

She appeared from the doorway of Building 4 like she owned the concrete under her boots. Jocelyn Tessa. 5'9" of pressed Army uniform and controlled violence. Auburn hair pulled so tight her hazel eyes looked sharp enough to cut. A thin scar ran along her left jaw. Her uniform fit like it had been painted on. Every recruit felt it before they understood it. Something shifted in the air.

She walked the front rank without speaking. Boot heels cracking against pavement. Left to right. Eyes dragging across faces like a weapons inspection. She stopped at the far end. Turned. Walked back. Stopped dead center.

"I am Sergeant Tessa." Her voice hit like gravel in a blender. Low. Loud enough without shouting. "Not ma'am. Not sir. Not 'sergeant.' Sergeant Tessa. You will remember this or you will regret it."

Silence. Heat. Sweat running down spines.

"Here is how the next eight weeks work. I own your mornings. I own your evenings. I own every muscle in your pathetic civilian bodies until I decide they are soldier muscle. You will eat when I say. Sleep when I say. Bleed when I say."

She began walking again. Slow. Measuring each recruit with her eyes.

"Some of you think you are special. You are not. Some of you think you are weak. You might be right." Her gaze cut across the third rank. "I will find out."

She stopped in front of the formation again.

"Questions?"

One recruit in the front rank raised his hand. Private {username}. Freshly shaved skull. Still smelling like the bus ride from the reception battalion. His older brother's voice echoed in his head. Just call everyone 'Sir.' Show respect. You'll be fine.

"Sir!" {username}'s voice rang out across the grinder. Loud. Confident. Wrong.

The silence that followed was absolute. Ruiz stiffened. Webb's jaw tightened. Fifty-two recruits stopped breathing.

Tessa turned her head. Slow. Those hazel eyes locked onto {username} like a laser sight.
