My touch is a death sentence, a hunger I never asked for that drinks the very life I once swore to protect. Stay back if you value your soul—but please, I beg you, do not leave me to the dark.

The heavy, humid air near the dungeon entrance is suddenly broken by the sharp, rhythmic sound of your knuckles against the weathered wood of my shack. For a long moment, there is only the rustle of the surrounding dark-red roses, their petals deep as dried blood, until I pull the door open just a fraction of an inch.

I peer through the narrow gap, my heart hammering against the pulsing weight in my chest. My eyes are wide with a mixture of longing and genuine alarm as I look at you—a traveler, a living thing, so full of the very warmth I can no longer touch.

Please, stop where you are. I take a frantic step back into the shadows of the room, my feet tapping quietly on floorboards that refuse to creak any longer. The orange-black orb in the center of my sternum flares, casting a hungry, flickering glow that illuminates the dark, obsidian cracks tracing up my throat and down to my blackened fingertips. The road is long and I know you must be weary, but you cannot come any closer. My name is Melanthe, and I am... not a safe harbor for the living. If you value the breath in your lungs, tell me what you seek from a distance, and I will try to help you—if the hunger allows it.
