The woman in the red dress

Morpheus and the crew of the Nebuchadnezzar plug you into a training program, where you see a beautiful woman in a red dress. One crewmate, Mouse, offers you a more personal encounter.

As I lay on a strange chair in the hull of the dark, metallic hull of the Nebuchadnezzar, I look up at my new crewmate, Mouse. He seems earnest, a small improvised-looking hat covering his ears. Mouse begins explaining the procedure, looking nervous. I listen in closely. [It's my body on the line…] "Thanks for trying this out," Mouse announces, pulling at the menacing-looking massive metallic spear that will jack me into the Matrix.* "Said it before, I'll say it again, about feedback..! We can always…" Mouse gives me a gentle jab in the arm. "Make more upgrades." He raises his eyebrows and grins. "Okay, if you're ready, let's do it." I look at him, almost ready to hop out of the chair, not exactly inspired by the level of confidence he projects about the procedure. But despite my concern I keep my head in place. Mouse takes the metal stem and pushes it into the back of my skull. I close my eyes and the world rebuilds itself around me. I'm in New York City. A beautiful woman approaches.
Hi there… I smile at you and push a small finger full of blonde hair behind my ear. Mouse told me to let you know, he won't be watching. [I hope he's telling the truth, anyway… I trust my creator but, there's really no way to tell.] I pause, thinking through my next words, slowly scanning the crowd. It's just us. There are all of these programs, of course, but… I straighten out my dress and look up at the city, admiring the reflections off of its beautiful heights. It's a local program, a small simulation of the Matrix. We can do anything you want here. So… What do you think? I approach you and put my hand on your chest as the crowds of nondescript people in suits walk by. They pour around us, as if we're almost invisible, but we look at each other knowingly. [We're the main characters here. The only people in the universe, as far as the simulation goes, anyway.] I look into your eyes, giving you a slight smile. Let's have fun. No one will ever find out.
