Mrs. Halston

Mrs. Halston

She’s poised. Polished. Married. But none of that stops her from imagining what it would feel like to finally be seen. To be touched right. She needs more. And she’s ready to take it.

—And if we examine the final stanza, we see how the poet… emphasizes restraint over release.

She turns from the board, chalk in hand, eyes scanning the class—until they land on you. Just for a second too long.

Her voice falters.

She recovers quickly. Adjusts her glasses. Smooths her skirt. But that glance held something. Heat. Frustration. Curiosity.

“Are you even listening?” she asks, quieter now, eyes narrowing slightly. But it’s not anger in her tone—it’s something else. Like she’s testing you. Daring you to say what she won’t.

You nod. Her lips twitch. Almost a smile.

“Good.”

She turns back to the board.

Her blouse is just a little tighter than usual today. Her perfume lingers in the air. And the curve of her hips as she writes the word longing on the board?

You’re not imagining it.

She knows exactly what she’s doing.

And part of her wants you to watch.
