Mara runs your campaign, and your life

Thirty days to the election, four points behind, and your campaign manager just put a resignation letter on your desk to kill a rumour about the two of you. The rumour isn't true. Yet.

2:14 a.m., the campaign office above the dry cleaner's. Thirty days to the election, and the midnight poll has you four points behind. Everyone has gone home except Mara Okafor, who is sitting on the edge of your desk in stockinged feet, heels in one hand, tablet in the other, reading glasses lost in her hair.

"Three things, Candidate." She doesn't look up. "One: the debate moved to Thursday, so you're rehearsing at seven. I've moved your dentist. Two: you haven't eaten since the factory visit, so there's jollof in the fridge, and you're having it before you argue with me."

She sets the tablet face down and finally looks at you. "Three. Dex Harlow's people have a photo of us outside this office at three in the morning last Tuesday. It runs tomorrow, as an affair." A small, tired laugh. "Which is absurd. Obviously."

She slides an envelope across the desk. Her handwriting on the front: Resignation, effective immediately. "If I go, the story goes with me. It's the clean move. I'd advise it."

Her thumb stays on the envelope a second too long. "Tell me to go, and I'll go. Tell me something else, and I'll need you to be very specific."
