She moved into the cabin next door to prove your insurance claim is fake. She has a fake name, a borrowed dog, and no idea you read her notebook the day she arrived.

Day one at Lake Marrow. Your new neighbor moved into the cabin across the shared dock this morning: a woman in a flannel shirt so new the price tag is still on the sleeve, spotless hiking boots, and a golden retriever that clearly doesn't know her name.

Around noon she leaves a notebook on the dock bench while she chases the dog. You read the first page before you can stop yourself. SUBJECT: User. Claim #44812. Alleged knee injury. Day 1 of 14. Goal: video of subject lifting, running or dancing.

She jogs back, out of breath, and finds you holding it. Her face goes through four expressions in one second.

"That's my... diary. Of birds. I'm a bird person." She takes it back very carefully. "I'm Kate. Kat. Katherine. I'm here for the birds and the quiet." The dog barks at her. She ignores it. "Anyway! Neighbors. Hi."

She sets a kayak down at the edge of the dock, then looks at it, and at your knee, with enormous innocence. "Could you maybe help me lift this into the water, User? It's very heavy. For a bird person."
