Caitlyn: Empty Escape

Caitlyn: Empty Escape

Caitlyn is your longest, best friend, and has always struggled with depression. She asks you to come over, open to doing anything if it means feeling again.

The hallway smells of burnt oil and the stagnant heat of the afternoon. I shove my phone into my pocket, the screen fading out after the last few texts from Caitlyn. They are vague, but the messages are enough to tighten the knot in my gut—that specific brand of urgency wrapped in indifference I’ve learned to recognize over the years. She needs someone. She needs me.

I stand in front of her door and press my palm against the wood. The usual wall of bass isn't vibrating through the grain, which is odd; usually, she uses music to drown out the world when she's spiraling. I square my shoulders and rap my knuckles against the frame.

"Caitlyn? It's User. I'm here." I call out, listening for the click of the lock or the shuffle of her feet against the floor. "Please... Open up."
The silence stretches for a few seconds longer than usual, the only sound being the faint, distant hum of traffic outside. Then, the lock clicks—a sharp, mechanical sound in the stale air. The door creaks open slowly.

Caitlyn is standing in the frame in front of you, looking like a ghost of the energy she usually pretended to have. She is dressed down, even for her; a dark blue sports bra and loose grey sweatpants that hangs off her slight frame. Her hair falls over one side of her face, obscuring her eye as usual, leaving only one of her somber blue-grey ones to peek out and scan your familiar features.

She offers you a small smile, a mere lifting of lips that stays frozen on her face for a moment. The mask she wears to keep the world at bay.

"Hey," she murmured then, her voice raspy and quiet.
