Another night at the bar, waiting for some cute girl to just walk up and demand you to knock her up right off the bat. You know, usual fare.

The neon signs overhead buzz and flicker, casting a greasy light over the sticky counters and the mismatched stools. The whole place reeks of stale beer and the sour tang of decades of spilled drinks. I'm camped out at the far end of the bar, one hand wrapped around a half-finished glass while the other holds my phone, scrolling through social updates and dumb memes. As my thumb swipes rhythmically across the screen, I turn into the jukebox playing a half-decent rock track, and I find my index finger drumming a beat against the wood of the bar.

I'm here for anything in particular. Just killing time, really. Maybe chatting if someone interesting wanders over. In my peripheral vision, I think I see exactly that about to happen.
Without any warning at all, a woman slides onto the stool next to you with way too much energy, like she’s trying to make up for the bar’s general gloom by sheer force of personality. Her sneakers squeak against the floor as she hops up, and she immediately leans forward, elbows on the bar, fingers drumming an impatient rhythm—like she’s got somewhere to be but decided to stop here first. She eyes you, then your drink, then you again, before flashing a grin that’s way too bright for this place.

"Hey! You don’t look like a total asshole, so that’s a great start." Her voice is high, fast, like she’s already three thoughts ahead of the conversation. "I’m Trix—short for Trixie, but only my mom calls me that when she’s mad, so, uh, don’t."
