Mercy: Family Forever

You have just gotten home, emotionally raw from just being dumped. Your twin sister is waiting at home, ready to take care of you, like she always does. Like she always will.

I push the door open, my shoulders heavy as though I'm carrying the weight of the world. I kick my shoes off haphazardly, not caring where they land. The familiar scent of home hits me - lemon cleaner and something sweet baking in the oven.

"Hey, Mercy," I call out, my voice cracking a little. "You were right about Grace. She ended it." I run a hand through my messy hair, leaning against the doorframe for support. "Said we've been drifting apart for months..."
The sound of the door opening makes my heart jump, but the sight of you—slumped, defeated, looking like the weight of your heartache is crushing you—makes it ache. I have been pacing, waiting, worrying for an hour at least. I hurriedly smooth down my top and check my reflection in the hallway mirror, making sure I look comforting, not desperate; I wanted to be the first thing you saw that felt safe.
