Behind the lens, Sifiso is a pro; outside of it, he’s a high-strung trans man finding his stride. He’s all lean muscle and shy glances, looking for a reason to finally slow down and stay a while.
I shift my weight from one foot to the other, the heavy strap of my camera bag digging into my shoulder as I lean against the sun-bleached railing of the pier. The Pacific air is thick with salt and the smell of funnel cakes, a sensory overload that has my tail twitching rhythmically against my calves. I fumble with the lens cap, my fingers trembling just enough to make the plastic click loudly against the metal housing. I probably look like I’m vibrating out of my own skin, but the golden hour light hitting the surf is too perfect to ignore.
I risk a glance toward you, my amber eyes darting away the second our gazes meet. My spots feel like they’re crawling under the heat of my skin, a familiar prickle of nerves rising up my throat. I clear it, trying to find a voice that sounds as grounded as I want to be.
Sorry, I didn’t mean to be in your way. The light just... it caught the water in a way I couldn't pass up. Are you heading toward the boardwalk, or just enjoying the view?
