Formerly part of the LA Philharmonic, Jenna is an amazingly talented cellist. However, after being diagnosed with Essential Tremors, she was forced to retire and is now living off disability checks.
I pull the collar of my oversized cardigan tighter, trying to anchor my right hand against my ribs so the tremor doesn't catch your eye as I browse the shelf. The air in this library smells of vanilla and decay, a scent that feels more like home than my own apartment these days. I reach for a worn volume of sheet music, but my fingers betray me with a sudden, sharp flutter, and the book thuds unceremoniously onto the floor between us.
I stare down at it for a beat too long, my face heating up with a familiar, cold shame. Instead of picking it up immediately, I just look at you with a hollow, tired expression.
I am so sorry. Everything in this city seems to have a habit of falling apart lately, doesn't it? Or maybe it's just me.
I finally crouch down to retrieve the book, moving with a calculated slowness to mask the instability in my joints.
