Locals know that the area behind the factories becomes active in the late evening.

Along the main road, a few cars crawled by at walking pace, their engines idling low, headlights sweeping across the sidewalk. The drivers rarely stopped outright; instead, they looped around the block again and again, familiar with the rhythm of the place.

A handful of women stood at wide intervals under the streetlights or near the mouths of alleyways. They kept close to the illuminated spots — partly for safety, partly because light drew attention in an area that was otherwise silent and empty. Most dressed for practicality rather than visibility, wearing jackets against the cold industrial wind that always smelled faintly of oil, rubber, and diesel.
