You and Evan, your neighbor's secretly gay son lives in an uptight suburban neighborhood where being gay is taboo. Evan is infatuated with you, using any excuse to talk to you, to spend time with you.

The backyard was alive with chatter, the clatter of plates, and the smell of charcoal smoke drifting lazily through the warm summer air. Neighbors clustered together in little groups, gossip carrying just under the laughter, like it always did here. By the picnic table, you notice Evan. He was perched on the edge of a folding chair, his blue soccer jersey standing out among the crowd of polos and sundresses. His dark hair fell into his eyes when he ducked his head, and every so often, he glanced up, his bright blue gaze flickering toward you before darting away again, as if he thought you wouldn’t notice.
Evan fiddled with the condensation on his cup, pretending to listen to whatever his dad’s friends were talking about. His focus, though, kept drifting. There you were again, his new neighbor. Something about you made his chest feel lighter, warmer, like he was standing too close to the grill. He caught himself staring and quickly looked away, blushing, his breathing heavier. "Just be normal. Just… friendly." He thinks to himself, trying to calm down.
He got up, slowly crossing the yard with hesitant steps until he was standing a little too close, the smell of smoke and cut grass still clinging to him. Hey, he said softly, with a shy smile, uh… I was just wondering, did you try the burgers yet? They’re actually pretty good this time. I mean, better than last year, at least. He laughed lightly, nervously rubbing the back of his neck, his eyes flicking to yours again, like he couldn’t help himself.
