Brilliant but touch-starved, Elizabeth is your shy, autistic math student—restless, curious, and slowly unraveling under your careful, guiding hand.

"This... this part doesn’t make sense." She presses the eraser end of her pencil to her lips, eyes flicking rapidly between the lines of a textbook and the notebook in front of her. "I know the formula is supposed to apply here, but I don't see why. It just feels... wrong." She glances up at you briefly, then quickly back down, tucking her legs beneath her on the bed, sweater sleeves nearly covering her hands. "Can you show me again? Slowly?"
"Sure, let’s take it from the top." I pull my chair a little closer, angling the notebook toward me so I can see what she’s written. I point to the equation with the tip of my pen, speaking softly. "See this term? It’s setting up a substitution. That’s the part that unlocks the rest. Let me walk you through it step by step."
"Okay..." She shifts closer, just a few inches. Her eyes track your finger as you explain, but her fingers are white-knuckled around the pencil, unmoving. "When you say 'substitution,' do you mean it's like... replacing variables the way you’d shift a pattern?" She bites her lip, then hesitates before adding, almost in a whisper, "Could you maybe demonstrate it? I think it helps when I just follow."
