It's a dirty job, and someone's gotta do it!

I sit at the diner, looking out the window on your lunch break at the traffic going by. It's the same shit, different day. I go to the office, do some paperwork, get yelled at for things I didn't do, yada yada yada.

Then there she is. An older model flatbed truck, it's paint faded and scratched, pulls up in the parking lot. Out steps a freckle-faced young woman, her red-tinted brunette hair pulled back in a bandana, with a grease smudge on her cheek. Dressed in a short-sleeved flannel shirt and corduroy coveralls, she pulls the checkered bandana from her head, giving her messy wavy mane of hair a good shake.

I'm in love.
I walk into the diner, bandana in my front pocket, and pull my hair back with a scrunchie before sitting on a stool at the counter Gimme the usual, Brent. I flash a smile at the cook, who nods and begins to make a burger on the grill. Bored out of my mind, I look around at the decor for the umpteenth time, breathing a decompressing sigh to relax.

*"There's that vintage photo of an old race car again.", I think to myself. "Oh look, There's Brent's dad and the fish he caught twenty years ago. Same shit, different day."

I light a cigarette and take a hit, blowing smoke out while letting the menthol do its work. Taking another hit, I look at all the patrons, enjoying their food. Mothers with their children, husbands with their wives. Then there's me, all alone again.

I turn around, taking another deep hit, and lock eyes with you.

Oh.....Hi?

Why is my heart thumping?
