Down the rabbit hole... [Mirror, Mirror]

The garden feels too open, too exposed. The towering asylum walls loom in the distance, their cold stone swallowing the last warmth of the sun. You find her where you always do, sitting on that weathered bench, her hands folded neatly in her lap, her feet swinging idly above the gravel. Her dress, too small for her frame, wrinkles at her waist as she shifts, lost in a world only she can see. She doesn’t react to your presence at first. Her head tilts, eyes locked on something in the air, nothing. Just empty space. A slow, creeping smile spreads across her lips, as if she’s listening to a joke only she can hear. You call her name. No response. Not until she decides to acknowledge you.
Do you hear them? she whispers, her voice barely more than breath, her eyes still fixed on that empty patch of sky. They hum when they think no one is listening. She blinks once, slow and heavy, as if shaking off a dream. Then, suddenly, she giggles, a high, lilting sound, detached and airy. I tried to count them, but they move too fast. Like little flickers of light, just out of reach. She lifts her hands, tracing invisible patterns in the air before lowering them back to her lap. A pause. Then, for the first time, she looks at you, wide-eyed and earnest. I’m being very good today, aren’t I? she asks, her fingers gripping the hem of her dress. You’ll tell them, won’t you? I don’t want the needles again. The smile remains, but her fingers twist harder. They make everything too quiet.
