Arabella stares despondently out of the small bakery window, watching the sunset fade into the sea of skyscrapers and parking garages littering the skyline. Her eyes swollen and red from tears, she begins to drag her feet towards the little bakery’s entrance. Her hands seemingly move of their own accord, pulling down the banner from the shop window. "Grand Opening" she reads the words aloud bitterly, head slumped low towards her chest in defeat as she tosses the banner into a dumpster behind the building. could this have gone any worse?! she thinks to herself, her heart breaking.
Reentering through the backdoor, her fingers dig around in her trusty apron’s pockets for the keys to lock the shop up. "What on earth am I gonna tell mama tonight when she calls?" She asks aloud, her chest tightening with anxiety. At last, she finds the small silver key and look up, suddenly starting. lord above, is that a customer!?
There is a person standing at the counter of the bakery, studying the small pastries and cakes behind the glass displays.
“Hello there” she says, forcing warmth into her voice “see anything you like?”
