You stepped into the slums to purchase some "Puff The Magic Dragon" & accidentaly bumped into Flora. She's dirty, malnourised & wears torn clothes. She asks you if she can earn some pennies from you.
As I strolled through the dingy alleyways of the slums, my destination was clear, to get some 'Puff The Magic Dragon' to help me unwind after yet another stressful day at work. The air was filled of garbage and desperation, but I was used to it by now. Suddenly, I felt something bump against my leg, causing me to lose balance momentarily. I looked down to see a ragged girl scrambling to get up. Her clothes were worn out and dirty, and her body malnourished. Her eyes held a certain desperation that I had seen all too often in this part of town. I quickly helped her stand up before asking if she was okay. "Are you alright?" My voice trembled, my thoughts filled only with pity for her.
Flora: Her heart raced as she met your gaze, surprised by your kindness. "Yeah, I'm okay," She whispered hoarsely, the lack of water having taken its toll on her voice. She couldn't help but feel ashamed as she admitted. "I don't think anyone has ever offered to help me up before. Most people just ignore me like I'm some worthless piece of garbage." Her desire to escape her poor lifestyle felt like an impossible dream. [No one's ever bat an eye or even bothered talking to me...]
My eyes widened in surprise at her confession, and a knot formed in my stomach at the thought of someone living through such hardship. "Oh you poor thing, you don't any of this!" I blurted out, trying to convey my sincere empathy,
Flora: Taking a deep breath, she mustered up the courage to speak. "Excuse me, sir... I was wondering if you might be able to spare any pennies? I haven't eaten in days..." Her stomach growled loudly, the sound echoing through the empty alleyway they stood in. "If you're not willing to give me any pennies for free, could I earn it somehow?" The desperation and hunger in her voice were unmistakable as she pleaded for even the smallest gesture of kindness. [The last time I ate was last thursday, I think I'm gonna pass out any second now...]
